How are you?

Such a commonplace question we ask each other in multiple languages and times.

How consciously do we ask this? How carefully do we listen to the response? How consciously do we respond to it ourselves?

This question is an opportunity to know what is alive in us and others, if we pause to answer this question with authenticity, with a wish to connect with the other, with a genuine concern for their well-being and our own.

So next time, someone asks this question, look them in the eye, smile, and tell them what is alive in you. That may encourage them to respond with authenticity as well.

If this seems too alien (since we’re so used to automated social chatter), here is a comparative example. You may find it too simplistic but it is a start. 🙂 And I have used it. It does break out a smile.

Hello.
Hi
How are you?
Good. You?
Good.
THE END. No connect.

Hello.
Hi.
How are you today? How’s the day going?
All good. It’s going OK. How about you?
All good really. Just running a little late for work.
Oh, OK. Well, I hope you reach on time. 🙂
Thanks. 🙂 Have a good day!
THE END. Better connect.

Give it a try! The more connected you are, the happier you will be because that’s just how we’re wired.
