When it comes to self-care, people at times get the notion that it is a selfish thing to do, that you should be taking care of other people – other people’s feelings, emotions, and needs. And self-care is relegated to the bottom of our priority list.
But I believe self-care is critical on an everyday basis. And that is because of the outcome of self-care.
What does self-care allow us to do?
When we take care of our physical, mental and emotional state, then we are in a position to make everyday choices and take bigger decisions in life from a state of equanimity. Equanimity calls us to accept things as they are; to have the courage, patience and understanding to receive life as it unfolds; and to make decisions that serve life rather than create greater disharmony within ourselves or with others around us.
Whatever methods we choose for our self-care, that should be the ultimate outcome. We reach a better position, a better state in our life so we can take care of ourselves and others.
