Have you observed how the same situation triggers different responses from us on different days?
Let’s say I’m having a great day. I realise I’m running late so I call in and inform and continue driving comfortably, assured that I have informed ahead.
Now, imagine if I’m having a bad day and realise I’m running late, and my anxiety could go up. I would call to inform ahead that I’ll be late but my heartbeat would be faster, my patience would be low and in response, I could drive faster to make up time.
So the cause of our behaviour isn’t so much, external events. External events can be a stimulus but they are never the cause of our behaviour at any moment. We are more influenced by our inner state, our needs and our expectations at the time.
So instead of focusing on external things that we cannot control, it is a better idea to focus on our inner state and learn to manage ourselves and take responsibility for our behaviour. This enables that inner peace and calm that allows us to be spontaneous and come up with life-serving ways to address our needs and those of others around us.
Taking responsibility can be very liberating!
